What Are Luffa Sponges?

Luffa Plant growing in gardenLuffa is a genus of tropical and subtropical vines in the cucumber family (Cucurbitaceae). Luffa after being harvested and cleaned In common non-technical language, the luffa, also spelled loofah, usually refers to the fruits of the species Luffa aegyptiaca and Luffa acutangula. It is cultivated and eaten as a vegetable, but must be harvested at a young stage of development to be edible. The vegetable is popular in India, China and Vietnam and there is growing interest in the US.

If the fruit is left on the vine until fully ripened, it is very fibrous. The green fruit turns pale then brown as it ripens. The skin is peeled, the seeds removed and then dried. The fully developed fruit is the source of the loofah sponge which is used in bathrooms and kitchens.

Luffa fibers are one of nature's best-kept plant secrets. Loofah fibers are used to create all types of sponges, most notably exfoliating sponges that gently remove dead skin cells without irritating the skin. These natural plant cellulose fibers have many uses – one being Loofah Soap.

On this website we refer to the actual plant as Luffa and the dried and mature sponge fibers as Loofah when used in soap. Our Luffas are home grown in our garden in the North Georgia Mountains without pesticides or chemicals. They become a great scrubbing sponge when fully matured and the fruits become a tough mass of fiber. These natural plant cellulose fibers have many uses – one being hand-crafted Loofah Soap. It is this fiber, from Luffa plants grown in our garden, that we make our hand crafted loofah soap. Heaven Scent Loofah Soap

What is Exfoliating

Exfoliation involves the removal of the oldest dead skin cells from the skin's surface. The word comes from the Latin word "exfoliare". Exfoliation is involved in all facials, during microdermabrasion, or chemical peels. Exfoliation can be achieved by mechanical or chemical means. From: Wikipedia

Loofah Sponges are an excellent exfoliating material. A totally natural material, especially when grown without use of pesticides and other chemicals. Loofah Sponges can be used as grown, typically cut or sewn into useful forms or incorportated into a Loofah Soap. If you look at the picture of the soap, you can see the Loofah Sponge in the circular soap bar.

Soap and Luffa fibers make a natural cleaning combination resulting in wonderful Loofah Soap. Luffas are placed in a cylindrical mold, filled with soap, cured, sliced and packaged. Since these are hand-crafted and use different shapes and sizes of luffas, no two Soaps are exactly alike. Colors from one batch to another may slightly vary as well.
